Tile Installation Tips From Tile Experts
Tip 1: Special mortar for big tiles
Use medium-bed mortar to set large tiles. Medium-bed is firmer and shrinks less than standard thin-set mortar, so large tiles will stay in position better as the mortar hardens.
Tip 2: Eliminate lippage
"Lippage" is the technical term for uneven tile edges. Use leveling clips and wedges to lay tile flat. Slip the clip under the tile and push in the wedge. After the thin-set hardens, break off the exposed clip.
Tip 3: Make clean cuts in porcelain
Score a porcelain tile with a shallow cut — about 1/8 in. deep. Cut a finishing end slit about 2 in. long. Then use slow, steady pressure to make the main cut.
Tip 4: Gentle smudge remover
Fine abrasive pads are great for removing stubborn thin-set smudges on the face of tile. They won't scratch glossy glazes.
Tip 5: Budget tile saw
You don't need to purchase a pricey tile saw to make the cuts you need. Use a handheld wet saw guided by a straightedge.
Tip 6: Use a margin trowel
A margin trowel is an essential tiling tool. Use it to clean out grout lines, pry up sunken tiles, nudge crooked ones and more.
Tip 7: Built-out trim
If you need to "build out" tile trim so it protrudes from the field tile, use a strip of tile backer. Slather one side with thin-set or mastic and stick it in place.
