Featured recipe:
Strawberry Custard Pie
These pies were a spring special at a restaurant where I used to work. Whoever was cook that day had to bake them first thing in the morning and again in the afternoon, as soon as strawberries were ready.

Meet This Issue’s Cookbook Connoisseur…
Lynn Shafer
When Lynn Shafer was a little girl, her mother collected cookbooks. When her dad was away in the military, she used to look through her mother’s cookbooks for fun. Lynn explains,
“Stationed in Germany, we didn't have much access to American television, so my sister and I would look at cookbooks with my mom. We’d laugh and talk about making the recipes for my dad when he came home."
“When he did come back, we’d have a new meal waiting for him. Whether the meal was a success or not, he would always say how proud of us he was. I continue this same tradition with my own kids!”
Lynn started her own collection as a teenager. She began to buy cookbooks, enjoying the pictures and cooking new recipes. Lynn says, “I love Taste of Home cookbooks because of the pictures, different stories and recipes that are easy and made by people like me.”
One of her favorite recipes is Apple Spice Snack Cake from Taste of Home’s Dinner on a Dime cookbook. According to Lynn, “It makes plenty and I can share with my neighbors or my kids’ friends when they come over.”
Today Lynn has more than 100 cookbooks, but her favorite is America’s Best Church Supper Recipes. Lynn has used the book many, many times for potlucks at her church. She says, “The recipes are so simple that I use them all the time in my weekly menu, too!”
