I sometimes don't think about using my slow cooker during the summer, but it makes sense. With the heat and humidity, no one wants to turn on their oven. Plus, a slow cooker allows you to prep it and forget it, so you can enjoy all that the summer days have to offer.

You'll find 12 top-notch slow cooker recipes in the new August/September issue (our Shortcuts issue). All are winners in our recent contest, and they're some of the best slow cooker dishes I've tasted. I'll be making the Louisiana Red Beans and Rice often; it's one of my favorite dishes, served with a square of cornbread.
