I sometimes don't think about using my slow cooker during the summer, but it makes sense. With the heat and humidity, no one wants to turn on their oven. Plus, a slow cooker allows you to prep it and forget it, so you can enjoy all that the summer days have to offer.

You'll find 12 top-notch slow cooker recipes in the new August/September issue (our Shortcuts issue). All are winners in our recent contest, and they're some of the best slow cooker dishes I've tasted. I'll be making the Louisiana Red Beans and Rice often; it's one of my favorite dishes, served with a square of cornbread. You'll find these recipes just the thing for busy weeknights—especially with the kids heading back to school in a few weeks.

We've also collected some tasty, quick-to-fix ideas for after-school snacking. Kids are going to love simple, homemade treats such as Maple Pecan Snack Mix that are ready to munch in less than 30 minutes.
