To be honest, we didn’t know quite what to expect when Taste of Home announced a 5-Ingredient recipe contest not quite a year ago. Okay, so you don’t have to count salt and pepper. But, we wondered, would just five ingredients be too limiting to yield outstanding recipes?

‘Secret’s in the Sauce’ BBQ Ribs

As the 12 winning recipes in your new August/September issue prove, creative cooks across the country wiped away any doubt! Slow-cooked and flavorful ‘Secret’s in the Sauce’ BBQ Ribs are perfect for a day when you’ll be out and about. Another of my personal favorites from the contest is Sparkling Kiwi Lemonade. How clever to freeze colorful fruit slices in ice cubes for this easy refresher.

This issue’s theme is “Shortcuts”—and you’ll find plenty of ideas to save time and money. I’m psyched about “Encore! Encore!” on page 52. Preparing a roast or turkey breast for a mouth-watering meal, and then using leftovers in other appealing recipes makes such good sense! And, get a load of the scrumptious shortcut desserts (page 14).

We tapped personal finance expert Jean Chatzky for her 10 best money-wise grocery shopping tips and polled our Test Kitchen cooks about convenience foods they use at home for a jump-start on meal preparation.

And we’ve tried something different this issue. We’ve moved the nutrition facts from the magazine to a downloadable online supplement.

The issue’s packed with practical ideas for busy cooks. Hope you enjoy it!
