Summertime always makes me think of childhood. I grew up not far from a lake, and the surrounding area was a wonderful place for a little girl to explore. In between days spent riding my bike to the local lily pond, the pier or the drive-in A&W, I remember spending time in the kitchen with my mom and grandmothers as they taught me to shuck ears of corn from a roadside stand or trim green beans fresh from our garden. The days were far less complicated, and our meals featured the best of summer's bounty.

Looking through the stories we've pulled together for this Plus newsletter reminds me of my favorite summertime flavors from childhood. In addition to easy, breezy homemade ice pops and fun, fresh picnic ideas, we're sharing some simple recipes for summertime entertaining and our top 10 patriotic desserts.
