Summer’s winding down, and as we’re soaking in these last long days, before fall puts us back to work again, I recall the words of the English aristocrat John Lubbock: “Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time.” Sounds good to me. I’ll hope you’ll spend a little time at Reminisce.com, where, as ever, the good old days live on.

Baseball is great, but America’s real favorite pastime is sleeping under the stars, and few campers in the last 50 years haven’t made the acquaintance of KOA. There are more than 500 KOA campgrounds across the United States and Canada, but it all started back in 1962 with one picture-perfect spot in Billings Montana.

"The breezes taste / Of apple peel.
The air is full / Of smells to feel—
Ripe fruit, old footballs, / Burning brush,
New books, erasers, / Chalk, and such.
The bee, his hive, / Well-honeyed hum,
And Mother cuts / Chrysanthemums.
Like plates washed clean / With suds, the days
Are polished with / A morning haze.”
—John Updike, September
