Reminisce books

Dear ##firstname[Friend]##,

The crisp, dry air of October always takes me back to images of my youth: hiking through color-draped woods, playing pick-up football games in the vacant lot and the excitement of Halloween night. I smile when I think of scraping up a Halloween disguise from old clothes, charcoal for the face, Dad’s old hat and something funky and slithery that I ordered by mail from the novelty company.

In recognition of fun memories conjured up by Halloween nights of our past, we’ve cast a Halloween spell over this month’s Reminisce newsletter. As always, consider passing our bit of nostalgia along to a friend or family member who may occasionally enjoy living in the past. If you’ve received this from someone, go ahead and sign up yourself.

What’s So Tricky About a Halloween Tweak?

Bt Nancy Dodd Fausel
Walnut, California

Halloween parties were my dad’s specialty, and since I was born on Oct. 30, 1933, hardly a year went by that I didn’t have a Halloween party. … If Dad was around for the event, you could be sure he’d liven things up.

This is a picture of my grandmother Minnie Belle Cochran Bragg Garton (on right) dressed as Mae West for Halloween sometime between 1928 and 1930. … She was a character, to say the least.

Black Cat Dippers With Pumpkin Pie Dip

Perhaps October and Halloween bring wonderful memories of your mom’s salty baked pumpkin seeds or her perfectly done squash swimming in melted butter. How about dessert like tart and sweet caramel apples and melt-in-your-mouth pumpkin pie? Can’t you just smell every one of the aromas associated with those foods like they were wafting out of the kitchen yesterday?

You’ll have more than a ghost of a chance to impress people with this fun Halloween recipe from our friends at Taste of Home.

Over the Back Fence

(With Halloween around the corner, here are some amusing morsels to tell your neighbor when you’re chatting in the yard or attending a costume party.)

Why don’t witches like to ride their brooms when they’re angry? They’re afraid of flying off the handle.

Why do ghouls and demons hang out together? Because demons are a ghoul’s best friend.

What happened to the guy who couldn’t keep up payments to his exorcist? He was repossessed.
