Eliot was wrong when he said "April is the cruelest month." For my money, January takes that spot, hands down. What other month can inspire you to make a resolution for the New Year—and then leave you on the doorstep of February ready to give up? But maybe it's not all January's fault. Fact is, when most of us make New Year's resolutions—myself included—they tend to be about losing something (like weight). Instead, what if we resolved to gain something, to add something to our lives? For me, that means trying new things. In the past, I've signed up for workshops at my local home improvement store and taken martial arts classes with my kids. This year, I'm going to learn something new in the kitchen, trying out new dishes (particularly fish, which I really should eat more of), and new techniques (I'm a disaster when it comes to making sauces, so that's on my list of culinary skills to perfect). I've also got a new Dutch oven I'm eager to try, so that will be a fun kitchen toy to play with. And yes, after the holidays, I definitely feel like I could stand to lose a few pounds, but I'm going to frame this resolution as a gain too. I'm going to add another 15 minutes to my daily exercise routine. I need to gain a little more flexibility (so more stretching is on my horizon too). What are you going to gain this year?
