There comes a point every summer—usually right about now—when I've had it with the heat. The dog days of August are closing in fast but I'm already panting. I'll admit it: there are some weekends when I'd rather be bending over the air conditioner than the grill.

So it's a good thing my wife is a gardener, because this is also the time of year when she's starting to harvest the veggies that are sprouting up, and cool, fresh salads are taking center stage on our table. Our barbecue favorites still have their place—it is summer, after all—but now we're alternating those hot entrees with hearty sandwiches too.

For my kids, all roads lead to the freezer. And now that they're old enough to have kitchen privileges, they're experimenting with all kinds of recipes for chilly treats, from frothy smoothies to ice pops to homemade ice cream. Of course, I always exercise my parental duties as chief taste tester. Sometimes, there's even a little left over for them.

Enjoy the rest of the summer. No matter what the thermometer reads, it's still the best time of year to chill out.
