May has always been a big month for me. Yeah, my birthday is in May, but I'm at an age where I'm much more thrilled at the prospect of Memorial Day and what most of us think of as the start of the grilling season.

I'm at a bit of a loss this year, though: I have no grill. I gave it away after we moved last year. At the time, I was happy to see it go. It was temperamental. Most days, it would take forever to get it lit. And then, once or twice a summer, usually during a big gathering, like a family reunion or a graduation party, it would ignite like a Hollywood special effect, sending a ball of flame and smoke into the sky. I'd put the grill in the garage after that, grumble that no burger or kabob was worth the trouble, and wait for my eyebrows to grow back.

But now, with summer fast approaching, I long for the smoke and sizzle of the barbecue, the aroma of my favorite grilled dishes wafting through the air. I can admit it: I miss that darn grill.

On the bright side, my family won't be at a loss for what to get me for my birthday this year. And I have tons of new grilling ideas to get the season off to a fiery start.
