FIELD EDITOR NEWSLETTER MAY 2018
Field Editor News You Can Use:

Hello Field Editors!

Well, gang, it’s still snowing here in NY. If one of you wouldn’t mind emailing me spring, I’d really appreciate it. I swear this has been the longest winter ever (and I love winter).

There have been a few questions related to the idea of original submissions, I thought this would be a good time to revisit the topic:

1. If I post a recipe I created on my blog, does that count as being published and therefore make it ineligible for consideration by TOH or its sister publications?

As long as the recipe is your original, it belongs to you and you can do what you like with it, including submit it to us for consideration. (We’d love to see it!)

2. If my recipe has won a food competition, can I submit that recipe to you?

Same as No. 1: As long as it’s yours, you can share it, unless you signed over the recipe rights in that contest. Make sure you read the fine print on anything you enter.

3. Can I submit a recipe that my mom got off the side of a can (or a flour bag, or box of baking mix, or…, or…, or…, etc.) two decades ago and has been a favorite of our family ever since, as long as I explain the history?

Not unless you change it enough to make it uniquely your own. Remember that rule of three.

4. Can I submit a recipe of my aunt's that makes an appearance at every holiday gathering, as long as I explain that it's hers and not an original of mine?

Yes, as long as it’s your aunt’s original. Don’t know for sure? That’s OK—submit it anyway. We realize that not everyone knows where shared recipes originated. If you know it’s your aunt’s recipe that she got from Betty Crocker, that’s not a good recipe to submit. It’s also smart to get your aunt’s permission ;)

***CONTEST ALERT***

The Dump Dinners and Desserts Contest ends June 4th. This contest is all about simple-prep meals. The kind where all the good stuff gets dumped together for an all-in-one dinner that’s as delicious as it is easy. We want to see dump dishes straight from the slow cooker, like pepperoni pizza soup, cheesy-spicy chili mac, and gooey triple-berry crisp. Or wow us with stovetop sensations like crispy garlic-butter shrimp, short rib ramen soup and bubbly s’mores cobbler. Get that oven going for dump-and-bakes like chicken caprese pasta, Hawaiian chicken and rice and caramel apple blondies. If it gets mixed together and comes out like magic, show it off! These can be skillet, Dutch oven, slow cooker, sheet pan, pressure cooker or casserole dishes. It’s the prep that makes these recipes so easy. Stay away from processed products (spice packets, cake mixes, etc.) as much as you can. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. Be sure to take a minute to read the official rules, too.

Happy cooking, my friends!
