Hello, fellow Field Editors!

BOO! Did I scare ya? Come on, humor me a little and at least pretend you jumped. October is definitely time for some hocus pocus. I can't say that Halloween is one of my favorite holidays but it sure is fun to see the little kids all dressed up when they come toddling up to the door. This year we're having a Halloween soup party and everyone's invited! Put your thinking caps on and see what sort of Spooky Stews you can come up with. Maybe you'll make a pumpkin chowder (served in a pumpkin!), Green Goo Pea Soup (I call mine Swamp Soup), Hungarian Ghoul-ash, minestrone with tortellini "eyeballs" or anything with a spider web on top. Submit your creation as soon as you can. We'll even give you bonus points for a clever name! At the end of the year Ellie and I will pull a name from all the great submissions and send you something fun for playing along.

Remember the super-secret, Field Editor-only healthy recipe contest I told you about last month? You have one month left to get your entries in. Remember you can enter as many recipes as you can create! The deadline for this contest is November 7th, so make sure you get things entered before then. Feel free to message me if you want me to make sure we received them. Also, take a minute to read through the official rules. You can find them here.

I've been compiling a list of questions that seem to get asked over and over, I'll try to answer a few each month. I'll also add the questions and answers to the FAQ thread in the Field Editor Forum.

  1. Do I have to put the time it takes to prepare the recipes I submit and also how many they serve?
  2. Just plug a guess in this spot. The Test Kitchen will finalize prep time, cooking time and number of servings.

  3. When I submit recipes it asks me if it's made on the stovetop, oven or what...what do I put if I have to use both?
  4. The primary method is what counts. As with servings and prep time, the Test Kitchen cooks will adjust the method if they need to.

  5. What counts as a freebie in recipes that limit the number of ingredients for submission?
  6. Free ingredients include: salt, pepper, water, olive oil, canola oil. However, we DO count "special" salt and pepper like kosher salt and coarse pepper.

  7. Will my recipe submissions get picked for Simple & Delicious or Country Woman instead of TOH?
  8. When you submit a recipe to us for consideration, you never know where it might pop up. It can appear in any of our publications. Taste of Home, Simple & Delicious, Country Woman or even one of our bookazines, digest books or full size cookbooks. Anywhere it works, it goes and it might appear multiple times.

  9. What do I say when reviewing a recipe that my family just really didn't enjoy?
  10. Not every recipe is going to be a winner for you and your family, but that doesn't mean you can't leave a positive review. "This recipe turned out great but my family really didn't care for the flavor" or "We felt this recipe needed a little jazzing up. If I make it again, I might add something extra." If you're stumped for wording but really want to leave a review, message me or Ellie and we'll help you write something that works for everyone.

  11. What is my role in promoting the TOH publications?
  12. As volunteer Field Editors, you're our top fans and love to cook for your families and friends—just like most of our readers. Promoting the Taste of Home brand probably comes naturally without you even knowing. Sharing is caring. By helping get the word out about what we have to offer you're promoting our brand best. When a friend or family member is looking for a recipe, make Taste of Home your first source. With close to 50,000 recipes on our site we probably have just what they're looking for. Periodically we ask you to share information about our books, subscription offers or other fun products. This is always optional but we thank you for any support you give us.
I hope this information helps you. Next month I'll focus on what makes a recipe uniquely yours. I know that it can be confusing and even a little scary when you're trying to use another recipe for inspiration. As always, if you need any help or have any questions feel free to shoot me a note. My email box is always open.

Happy cooking, my friends!
