Tip 1: Check for water damage
Leaks around a sink rim can soak the particleboard under the plastic laminate. A little water damage is normla. But severe swelling and crumbling will prevent the new sink from sitting flat and will not provide a solid base for the clips that fasten the sink to the countertop. Check for bulges or areas where the laminate has loosened from the particleboard. Then look under the countertop for areas that are too spongy to support the sink. If you find any of these problems, replace the countertop.

Handy Plumbing Tips

Tip 1: Stop sink-sprayer hang-ups
If you have to jiggle the hose as you pull out your kitchen sink sprayer, chances are the hose is catching on the shutoff valves. For smooth operation, slip 1/2-in. foam pipe insulation over the pipes and shutoff handles. Tape it if it won't stay put. Get the insulation at home centers for about $3.

Tips for Installing Tile |
 |
Tip 1: Mix it smooth
After all the prep and layout work, you're finally ready to set tile and see some results. The last thing you want to do is stop and wait. But giving the thinset time to absorb water, or "slake," is the key to a smooth, chunk-free mix. A chunky mix will drive you crazy when you try to comb the thin-set onto the wall or floor. After slaking, remix and add a smidgen of water if needed. Play the same waiting game when you mix up the grout later.
