George

George Harrison,
Birding Expert

From the Expert

I've heard that leaving sugar-water feeders up too long can interfere with the migration of hummingbirds. Is this true?

George: Don't worry about feeding hummingbirds, orioles or other birds too late in autumn. It's not food that determines when birds migrate, it's the amount of sunlight. In fact, it's a good idea to feed these birds as late as possible to give them a good nutritional start on their journey. Plus, the feeders may benefit migrating hummingbirds that pass through.

Puffin Cam

Puffin Cam

You’ve probably already watched eagles and hummingbirds live, but now the puffins are moving in. While puffins are birds of the open ocean (pelagic) floating; diving and spending much of their lives far from land, thanks to Audubon and explore.org, you can now watch them from the comfort of your home.

Watch the puffins live!
